A Poem for Van

The first time I truly saw the stars
In front of me was in the eyes of someone
Who truly cared for and about me.

They were so big—I saw my reflection
And everything behind me.
Before that moment, they had always
Seemed so far away.

Astronomers definitely got it wrong
When it comes to being anatomically correct.
They were so round and perfect
At that moment, it felt like I could
Have drawn them.

There isn’t a streetlight
Or a city in existence that could compare.
She kissed me and gave me a memory
That I’ll always remember.

Compared to her, everything else
Seemed small.
To this day, it still does.
I continue to search the sky for her,
Again and again.
