Twice A Lifetime From Now

I won’t take it personal
if you don’t recognize me the next time
you see me.
You didn’t recognize me the last time
you saw me.
It’s safe to say the time before that as
well.

No matter how much you change
whether this lifetime or the next.
I’ll know it’s you
by the way your smile releases the
weight that holds mine down.
Light but bold,
the way the sun cuts through a storm
like nothing happened.

Like most clouds,
they drift, always in motion,
curious, like they’re going to miss
something. The next second
different than the last.

No different than you.
Discovering something in the not knowing.
No different than me,
staring up at the clouds,
waiting to see you again.

I won’t take it personal
if you don’t recognize me.
There’s something special about
not knowing.

Whether this lifetime or the next,
I’ll know that it’s you
by the way your sun hits my face
The gravity of your world meeting
mine.
Soaking up everything that is not
Us
