With a Smile

When I saw you,

that’s when it started

some old love song

I haven’t heard in years

rose up in me

Like heat rising to the ceiling.

Some memories have hands,

even those not lived

Yet.

There are people who enter a room

and the air stays the same.

You, on the other hand,

made every nerve inside me stand up.

Better than me in any part of my life.

No urgency,

no understanding.

The world itself is possible,

but seeing you

made everything easier.

Not soft,

not hard,

but the way a love song does.

One you don’t realize you’re singing

until it’s almost done.

Gone

with a smile.
