Long Way Around

I took the long way around,
winding through your collarbone.
Your breath,
the traffic light
pausing
from red
to green.

A place of excitement,
controlled
in safety.

Your laugh,
a detour
to explore more.
The road ahead,
closed
for maintenance.

I discovered the coast
along the curve
of your shoulder
the way salt blends
with your skin.

The steam
of your sandy skin,
cooled
from the splash
of water
that extends itself
cool and chill
as your demeanor.

Your back winds down
a narrow alley,
each vertebrae jagged,
perfectly etched
like braille
in the palm
of my hand.

Each goosebump,
a story to tell
a place
to rest
until morning.

I journey across
your chest,
following
the stars
of your eyes,
pulled
by every inhale.

I walk slow
each step
a kiss,
deliberately placed.

A memory
I will not forget.
Like cool feet
on hot pavement,
searching
for the comfort
of warmth.

Your heartbeat
not only a guide,
but a city
I’ve only
dreamt of.
