Emptiness

You are the light that dances on the wall,
and I am the shadow
that moves between the gaps.

You’ve pierced and opened me
long enough to feel.

My hands move without thinking
like a madman discovering emptiness,
with no one but himself for comfort.

I’ve found you in the spaces
no one looks
the space between heartbeats,
the gaps between closed fingers.

Patting away,
I hear your heart.
I don’t just feel it
I join it.

Drumming in the echoes
the world is too loud to hear.
A place where only souls
recognize souls.

Through my hands,
you move through me
not afraid to meet me halfway,
not afraid to call me
without calling me,
through the thump of your heart.

You are the light that dances on the wall,
ignited by fire
formless, oblique.

I don’t kiss you.
I don’t take it for granted.
I commune
and move with you.

I am the shadow
that moves without force.

And though this fire I feel
can never truly be mine,
your heart lets me borrow its rhythm
long enough
to forget
what emptiness feels like.
